She was named after the film "Johnny Belinda" (1948), her mother's favorite movie. She has three sisters (Hope, Sarah and Mary) and three brothers (Josh, Joe and Butch). Belinda Carlisle graduated from Newbury Park High School where she was a cheerleader. She left home at the age of 19 years old in order to pursuit her dream of becoming a star.
Belinda Carlisle's first experience in music was as a drummer for the punk band "The Germs". After leaving this band, she co-founded "The Go-Go's". The members of the band were Charlotte Caffey (bassist-turned-guitarist), Kathy Valentine (guitarist-turned-bassist) and Gina Schock (drummer). "The Go-Go's" was one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, famous also for writing their own music and playing their own instruments. Their first album was released in 1981 and it was called "Beauty And The Beat". This album spent six weeks at number 1. Their second album, "Vacation", was released in 1982. This album just almost as successful as the first and it sold over one million copies. Some of the other members believed that there was too much focus placed on Belinda as the star, Gina Schock and Charlotte Caffey had some health problems and all the members had drug addictions. Because of these problems the group broke up in spring 1985.
After the breakup of "The Go-Go's", Belinda Carlisle began her solo career. The only member of the group that she continued to work with was Charlotte Caffey. In 1986 she released her first solo album entitled "Belinda". This was an international success. Her summer hit "Mad About You" peaked at the third place in the U.S. and reached number one in other countries. Her second album was "Heaven on Earth", released in 1987. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award. The album's producer, Rick Nowels worked also with Stevie Nicks, Jennifer Rush, Kim Wilde, and Madonna. Her next albums were "Runaway Horses" (1989), "Live Your Life Be Free" (1991), "Real" (1993), "A Woman and a Man" (1996) and "Voila" (2007).
