Alanis Morissette The Move To Los Angeles

In 1993, Alanis Morissette moved from the city she was born (Ottawa), to Toronto and later to Nashville, with the scope to know many more personalities tied to the world of music. Both attempts were revealed but unfruitful. After she moves to Los Angeles she only enters in contact with the producer and composer Glen Ballard.

Ballard worked with Morisette and the first result was the song “Perfect”, written and recorded in twenty minutes. “Perfect” was practically the only recording that the two carried out. After that period follow an intense job from the singer who poured on paper all her ideas. In the same time Morisette reveals an episode, in which she was robbed from two men, and her only worry was her notes.

Later on, she wrote on purpose of her transfer to Los Angeles, in the text of the song “Unprodigal Daughter” (in the album Feast on Scraps). Of them little Jagged Little Pill was recorded. Morissette, encouraged from Ballard, was much autobiographic one in the creation of own songs.

Ballard and Morissette recorded the songs Jagged Little Pill in the same moment practically in which they wrote it. According to how much Morissette told, Ballard was the first collaborator encouraged who she expressed her emotions in complete way and without some fear. Like result, Morissette put in the witnesses of the songs all same himself, from her love for the life (“You Learn”), to her infatuations (“Head Over Feet”), to her darker and brutal fantasies of vendetta (“You Oughta Know”). Morissette drew inspiration for her lyrics exclusively from personal experiences. As an example, when she began to having contacts with the record houses, she wrote and she recorded “Right Through You” (present in Jagged Little Pill), putting in the text the impressions received from their organization of type. Finally in the spring of 1995, she signed a contract with the Maverick Records.
